Section 1, officially Right Field Grandstand 2, is way out in right field. It is close to Section 43 of the bleachers, separated from it by an alley, which was formerly an open access path to the field but now is partly filled by a ramp to the bleachers. So Section 1 offers the same view as bleacher 43 at the same or slightly higher price. For the extra dollar or two, you get a roof over your head.
Section 1 formerly extended all the way down to the field, but the area between the ramp opening and the field was reclassified as Right Field Boxes (now Right Field Boxes 1 and 87, with Box 1 bordering the field). In 1975 Section 1 held 402 seats in 50 rows. Currently it holds 140 seats in 18 rows.
When Sections 1 through 10 were built in the 1930s, there were no seats, only benches. Rows were closer together, so there was even less leg room than there is now. In these sections you will notice that after every 4th row there is extra vertical separation from the next row. That indicates that 4 rows of seats were created out of 5 rows of benches. A few inches of concrete were added to make four rows deeper, and the fifth row was sacrificed. So when the following row was made deeper, it started on a level an extra row higher than the 4th. What this means is that if you are in rows 2, 6, 10, or 14, you have an extra height advantage over the row in front of you.
Rows 1 through 10 are higher priced than rows 11 through 18.
Best seats: Row 1 Seats 7-8
Worst seat: Row 1 Seat 1 (right behind Pole 1, one of three worst seats in Fenway Park)
